BRICK BONDS | MASONRY

Brick Bonds

brick bond is refers to a pattern to arranging bricks to ensure structure stability.




Header is brick laid horizontally with its smaller surface toward front of the wall width wise .

Stretcher is a brick laid horizontally with it's longest surface towards the wall length-wise.

Coin is the corner brick where two wall intersect. 

generally there are three types of brick bond used in daily construction. the stretcher bond the English bond and the Flemish bond.

in stretcher bond every brick laid in stretcher position towards front of the wall.




every course end with a half brick bat to break a joint of bond.
If wall is constructed straight. the stretcher bond is usually used in wall bearing lighter load such as partition walls.

The English bond is made by alternating header and stretcher courses. Queen closer is placed in second penultimate positions on header courses. English bond is used for heavy load bearing wall.




The Flemish bond is made of courses alternating header and stretcher bond. each course start with stretcher and will end with stretcher.
the courses starts with header and end with the header as well. these courses also contains Queen closer in second and penultimate position.
