Green architecture

What is green building?
The term green refers to environmentally friendly pracces from building design to  the       landscaping choices.
➢   It also encompasses energy use, water use, and storm water and  wastewater  re use. Any      building ,old or new, can be convert in green  by following:-
➢  Reduce energy use.
➢  Improve indoor air quality.
➢  Reduce construcon material waste.
➢  Minimize water usage.
➢  Energy Efficiency
➢  Use of Recycled / recyclable Products
➢ Use of Renewable Energy
➢ Water efficiency
➢Ulmately leads to Sustainable Development
➢reduce carbon consumpon
IMPORTANCE OF GREEN BUILDING
➢Economic Factor : resource efficiency  -reducons in operaon costs.
➢Environmental Factor : solar powering - Recycling rainwater – Reusing building materials.
➢Social Benefits:  non-toxic, low eming material more comfortable living – working environments.
     GREEN BUILDING STANDARDS
INCLUDE:-
1.Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design   (LEED)
2.Green Globes

1.RETREAT:  Resource  Efficient  TERI  Retreat  for  Environmental  Awareness and Training ,Gurgaon
GENERAL    DESCRIPTION
RETREAT IS TERI’S  VISION  REALIZED  THE  VISION  OF  BUILDING  A  SUSTAINALBLE  HABITAT,WHICH  IS  NOT JUST  THE  FIRST  OF  ITS  KIND  IN  THIS  PART  OF  THE  WORLD,BUT  ALSO  ONE  THAT  INSPIRES  MANY  SUCH HABITATS  TO  BE  CREATED  IN  FUTURE. • RETREAT IS A  PART  OF THE  36-HECTARE  TERI  CAMPUS  AT  GUAL PAHARI,ABOUT  30KM  SOUTH OF DELHI,IN  THE  NORTHERN  STATE  OF  HARYANA.BUILT  AS  A  MODEL  TRAINING  COMPLEX,RETREAT  DEMON STRATES  EFFICIENT  UTILIZATION  OF  ENERGY,SUSTAINABLE  AND  INTEGRATED  USE  OF  BOTH  NATURAL RESOURCES  AND  CLEAN  AND RENEWABLE  ENERGY  TECNOLOGY  ,AND EFFICIENCT  WASTE  MANAGEMENT. • IT IS A 30 ROOM TRAINING  HOSTEL WITH CONFERENCE  FACILITIES  FOR  100  PEOPLE,DINNING  SPACE  AND A  KITCHEN,RECREATIONAL  AREA,COMPUTER  ROOM  AND  A  LIBRARY. • TO INTEGRATE  THE  FUNCTIONALITY  OF  THE  BULDING  WITH ENERGY  APPLICATIONS • TO MEET THE SPACE CONDITION  AND LIGHTINING  DEMANDS THROUGH ENERGY  EFFICIENT  SYSTEM.
DESIGN  FEATURES
PASSIVE  DESIGN  SYSTEM •
VARIOUS PASSIVE  DESIGN  CONCEPT  HAVE  RESULT  IN  A  REDUCTION  OF  SPACE CONDITIONING  LOADS  BY  10%  -  15%.BUILDING  ENVELOP  EFFICIENCY  ,WHICH  RESULT  IN LOWERING  OF  SPACES  CONDITIONING  LOADS,WAS  ACHIVED  BY  ADOPTION  OF  VARIOUS PASSIVE  TECNIQUES.
• THE ROOF IS INSULATED BY  USING  VERMICULITE  CONCRETE  AND CHINA  MOSAIC  WHITE FINISH.  WALL  ARE  INSULATED  BY  USING  EXPAND  POLYSTYRENE  INSULATION.
• PART OF THE BUILDING  IS SUNK INTO THE  GROUND IN  ORDER  TO TAKE  ADVANTAGE  OF GROUND STORAGE AND THUS STABILIZE  INTERNAL  TEMPERATURE..
• SHADING DEVICE  AND FNESTRATION  HAVE  BEEN  DESIGNED TO CUT  OFF  SUMMER  SUN  AND TO LET  IN WINTER  SUN.
• THE BUILDING  IS ORIENTED ALONG  THE  EAST  –  WEST  AXIS  SO AS TO HAVE  MAXIMUM EXPOSURE  ALONG THE  NORTH AND SOUTH.THE  NORTH BLOCK IS  MADE  SLIGHTLY  CONCAVE  TOWARDS  THE  FRONT,WHILE  SOUTH BLOCK  FROM  A  HYBIRD CONVEX SURFACE  OF    LARGE  IMAGINARY  CONES  THAT  GENERATED THE  SLIGHTLY  FREE GEOMETRY  AND THIS  ALLOWS  THE  ARCHITECTURE  TO  BREAK AWAY  THE  GRID IRON  APPROACH NORMALLY ASSOCIATE  WITH  ‘SOLAR  ARCHITECTURE’.
ORIENTATION
➢ THE TERI RETREAT  BUILDING,  GURGAON  HAS  BEEN  SELECTED  TO  SHOW  HOW  ORIENTATION  ALSO PLAYS  AN IMPORTANT  ROLE  IN  “SOLAR  ARCHITECTURE”.  THE  TERI  RETREAT  BUILDING  WAS  ORIENTED  ALONG  THE EAST-WEST  AXIS  SO  AS  TO  HAVE  MAXIMUM  EXPOSURE  ALONG  NORTH AND SOUTH WHICH IS THE  MOST RECOMMENDED ORIENTATION  IN  SOLAR  PASSIVE  ARCHITECTURE.  SOUTH  ORIENTATION  RECEIVES  MAXIMUM SOLAR  RADIATION  DURING  WINTERS  WHICH IS  PREFERABLE  AS  COMPOSITE  CLIMATE  RECEIVES  SEVERE WINTERS.  THE  ORIENTATION  ENSURED  WINTER  SUN  (WHILE  KEEPING  THE  SUMMER  SUN  OUT)  AND  ADEQUATE DAYLIGHT  IN  THE  BUILDING.

Design features
1. PLANNING TECHNIQUE
Building is largely buried under the ground to use earth masses for natural insulaon.
➢ the roof form creates an efficient surface/ Volume ratio opmizing material quantity.
➢venlang window at upper  volume release  the accumulaon hot through pressure difference.
➢External wall of the building are nearly a meter deep but have been hollowed out as alcoves to provide storage that becomes an insulaon wall with efficiency of space.

2.CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE
➢Locally made clay fuses over the concrete slab to form a non-conductive layer.
➢ clay fuses entrap air known as sandwich vault.
➢China mosaic glazed les enhances insulaon.
3.LIGHTING
➢ indirect lighng , upper level large opening – Facing north .
➢Sky light are inter inside building by projected masses from the roof. Small cut out on roof slab filled with hollow glass block.
➢ Day lighng by north-glazing, skylights, and roof cut-outs.

4. MICROCLIMATE
➢Water channels ,rain water and over flow of pumped water from the roof are harnessed through a series of cascading tanks and water channel to finally culminate in a pond form which it is recycled back or used for irrigang vegetaon
